Soul Scents ~ A Journey in the Son’s Embrace

Ten Years and It’s Still True

Paula awaken

What I found was joyously stunning.

Recently I read through hundreds of devotionals I’d written over a span of more than ten years. I was deciding which devotional thoughts I wanted to include my latest book project, Soul Scents ~ A Journey in the Son’s Embrace, which offers four volumes of devotional reading: Awaken, Rooted, Bloom, and Flourish. As I read, made my choices, and edited my heart rejoiced because I still believed it all.

The journey of the last ten years has been arduous, but the glorious truths our sweet Savior taught me along the way stand the test of time.

I may have been naïve in 2004 before the big storms hit. Back then I wrote in wonder as I absorbed new understanding of who Jesus is.  I may not have understood how deeply the concepts I penned would be tested. I certainly didn’t understand what I was praying as I offered my thoughts of praise and surrender, nor did I guess how God would take me at my word.

But I’m delighted to report it’s all true.

I edited word counts and clunky sentences, but the foundational concepts which I so naively typed many years ago needed no revision. And guess what? The devotionals I penned a few weeks ago are again written in wonder as I “absorb new understanding of who Jesus is.”

In 2004 I invited readers to go with me on a journey into the heart of Jesus. I declared we’d never run out of places to discover, and we never have. He shows us glimpses of His character then allows life experiences to solidify the understanding of the insight. Over time He takes initial understanding deeper and reveals new wonders of His Person.

To be vulnerable, our family rode some difficult waters after the earlier devotionals were written. In spring of 2015 I tried to write about the really hard years, but I often dissolved into tears at the computer.

The Lord called me away from those efforts and invited me to spend time with Him. I journaled, did some more Bible study in the Song of Solomon, and rested. Truth be told I spent a lot of time talking to my plants last summer! And the Lord, always the Healer, did what He does best and healed me.

In the fall the Lord released me back into focusing on development of Soul Scents. I wasn’t really surprised (although I was very pleased) when those months of seeking God resulted in devotions for volumes 3 & 4 of this collection. Even though I believed I was not productive last year, I was writing the rest of this series without knowing it.

I love how organic that is.

I’m excited to offer fellow travelers a year’s journey in the Son’s embrace. It begins with volume 1, Soul Scents: Awaken, and continues with a new devotional book releasing each quarter of 2016.

Now available on Kindle and in print. ~  Soul Scents: Awaken

Writing Through Discouragement

Writing is a lonely endeavor. Sometimes it can be quite discouraging. This article helps us reexamine the writing call.

As a writer do you ever deal with discouragement?

Wait! Isn’t that the definition of a writer?

Rejection and discouragement dog all artists, and the writing life is full of reasons to be downhearted.

I’m just like the rest of you, and I battle discouragement all the time.

The operative word in that sentence, however, is battle.

As in, fight against discouragement and all its attendant downer friends.

To that end, I’ve come up with things to do when my confidence in my ability and my work feels . . . threatened. Learn more.

On Giving Up

This is a great article on perseverance.

There’s a picture floating around Facebook of a guy eagerly digging a tunnel in search of diamonds. He’s been at it a long time and finally gives up. We can see the whole picture and know that just a few more plunges of his pickaxe will unleash the diamonds. He doesn’t know that. He’s tired and he walks away. Just before the reward.

Writing is like that. We work feverishly for long hours, never knowing when the reward is coming. We struggle. We run out of energy. We want to give up and do something easier. There is so much that gets in the way of our writing. For some, it’s a day job. For others, it’s family commitments. Still others deal with writers block. Or we hit a dry season. Whether good or bad, there is much in life that drains our energy. Learn more.

Book Reviews

I had a rough day a couple of weeks ago. My daughter fell and badly sprained her ankle. My 96-year-old mother-in-law fell in her kitchen, which I’ve determined is her personal Bermuda Triangle. After 4 firefighters came and helped her back up, I went and checked on her

Two falls before noon. Yes, gravity behaved badly that day.

While I managed to stay upright, my emotions were off-kilter, thanks to anxiety and juggling regular life with these unexpected emergencies. By midnight, I was worn out and yet wide-awake, adrenalin still coursing through my veins. So what did I do? Learn more.

When God Winks

I love it when I run across an article that encourages me in my writing journey. I wanted to share it with my readers.

I love it when God gives me a wink. I don’t mean that to sound disrespectful. But perhaps you’re like me, finding that, in the ordinariness of a day, the Lord just gives a ‘wink’-He shows up in a way that is small and insignificant perhaps on a large scale of world problems but which is oh, so meaningful to me, as His precious child. His wink lets me know that the God of the universe understands exactly where I am on this day, and that He is there with me.
His winks have especially encouraged me in my writing life.  Read more.

Asking For Advice

Have you ever needed direction or felt the need to pray and ask for advice? This article is a good reminder that our writing journey needs to be bathed in prayer.

When I was a kid we had these VHS tapes of animated Bible stories. We watched them over and over. The one I remember most?

Samson.

And I think the reason I remember it so well is every time I watched it I had a crazy hope that it’d turn out differently. That Samson would be smarter. That he wouldn’t trust Delilah. And that he’d keep his hair and his strength.

‘Course, every time he didn’t. And the ending, when he asks God for one final splash of strength and knocks over some pillars, never made me feel better. Learn more.
